Morning After

Stepping out, out upon the journey / To my abandoned bed
Little boy pointing at my footsteps / Red arrow pointing at my head

Big town clock stops its chiming / Stares in disbelief
Vicious dog drops his attitude / And the stick between his teeth

Walk along, walk along the journey / I didn’t make last night
Little boy pointing at my footsteps / And howling his delight

Suited man coughs in embarrassment / Puts his paper down
Kids, with gum, giggle on the corner / Red arrow following me round

And it’s the morning after
I’m leading the love parade
Peach trees in blossom
Never gonna fade

And it’s the morning after
Sun is on my side
You go on and take the bus,
I’ll take the fairground ride.

Nearly home, finishing my journey / And I could use a drink
Godly folk handing out their leaflets / Turn a shade of pink

Pregnant mum loses her pram control / Veering off the track
Kids, with gum, giggle on the corner / Red arrow still upon my back

And it’s the morning after
I’m leading the love parade
Peach trees in blossom
Never gonna fade

And it’s the morning after
Sun is on my side
You go on and take the bus,
I’ll take the fairground ride.

The creak of the night and the timber frame
The crack in my cold cup of tea
The eyes in the flickering light of the candle flame
The sound of the wind in the tree
Follow me

The smell of the day and the waking sun
The feel of the breath in my hair
Lingers there
The sound of the need and the dawn and the smoking gun
The taste of the change in the air…

And it’s the morning after
I’m leading the love parade
Peach trees in blossom
Never gonna fade

And it’s the morning after
Sun is on my side
You go on and take the bus,
I’ll take the fairground ride.
